Just to update you re Beauty - went to see her at Evesham and she is very much at home and is being looked after and spoilt by Pippa! It was lovely to see her playing in the garden with another greyhound, wagging her tail and acting like a puppy. Pippa is confident that she will be re-homed as shes a great dog-infact Pippa says it will be sad for her to see her go but theres no rush as Pippa waits for the right person to come along. It is really heart-warming to see this dog now so comfortable and loving every moment of attention shes getting. vivvycl Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What an adventure you have had Beauty, its now time to calm things down and get you settled in a nice home with all the comforts it brings. Just because you have lived a 'wild' life for a while does not mean you will not appreciate the finer things in life. I sincerely hope that a new home is forthcoming. Take Care Sweetheart. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

To Viv, you were certainly Beauty's guardian angel, without yours and your husbands patience Beauty may still be out on the street and as you said could have been run over by a car. You certainly sound a very nice caring person, it's a shame there are not alot more people out there like you (and all the other doglost helpers). Well done you should feel very proud of yourself. Have a lovely retirement Beauty and stay safe, Take care always.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So pleased to see you in the Blue Zone, Beauty. Well done everyone, who was involved in the rescue of this little girl. Greylady will be just so happy, I think that she has a passion for this breed. Beauty, I know that you will now have such a good life, being feral may be ok, BUT lounging on the sofa is so much better. Stay safe now Beauty, and enjoy some home comforts. You are a very brave girl, to have been able to survive for so long on your own resourses. The right home is out there waiting for you, what ever your needs may be. Just hang on in there girl, the grass is greener on this side. Love from Millie (a rescued ex racer) and her Mum. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to let you all know that the greyhound has indeed been caught and is now being looked after at the Evesham Greyhound Rescue where she is being assessed. She has settled in very well and is in good health. My husband and I have visited her and she is a lovely dog with superb temperament. We first began sighting her towards end Nov at about the same time each night. We contacted the gosport dog warden and were told that they were aware of her, that she had been living wild for at least two years and that they had had several failed attempts to catch her-we explained it was same time and place each night as she was a creature of habit. They could not help as the time in question 11pm approx was outside their office hours! We also contacted theRSPCA who informed us it was the dog wardens job and they would only come out if the dog was injured. Not to be put off we found a professional dog handler who was happy to help even at that time of night. It was by now nearing xmas and we had been watching out for her each night and trying to befriend her.In the meantime we had had support and advice from Margaret at Gloucester Greyhound Rescue and had also secured a place for her to go for the night once caught. We met the handler but the first night with him she was early so we were not in position but he got to see her. Xmas and Boxing nights we were on our own and did not see her at the usual time and were worried incase she had been hit by a car as we had seen nearly happen previously. A couple of nights later and with the third night with the handler she showed and he caught her without much struggle and she happily jumped into the back of his van. We took her to Bishops Waltham were she stayed the night with a rescue helper and the next day she was taken to Evesham. This was the best xmas present for my husband and myself and for Beauty as she is now known, it would not have been possible without the assistance of Margaret as mentioned above,Jackie O'Hara at Bishops Waltham,Jackie who works for the West Of England G R who drove from Somerset to B W the on to Evesham, and of course to Pippa who runs Evesham G R. A big thanks to the handler for his expertise and although he was being paid by us still came out over the xmas period and stood in the cold with us for two hours at a time! As it turned out she was easy to catch it just needed patience, it seems such a shame that she was out there for so long as it is clear from her behaviour at Pippas that she likes being made a fuss of, likes both human and other dogs' company and apparently the first night there she made herself comfy on the sofa! So a very happy start for the new year for her and we will continue to moniter her progress and be visiting her again shortly. The people that work for the G R are a marvelous lot and depend on voluntary funding most of which for obvious reasons is needed for vets bills-although food and bedding is also much needed and gratefully received. A vet from Gosport rang me yesterday as I sent them a poster about Maggie - she talked about a Greyhound who had been living rough for a couple of years and had recently been caught. Could this be the dog?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

please forgive me for not getting back to you all. it was a very close relative who was hurt by the armed robbers at the co op in town, its been a worrying time, and then my OH went down with Man flu, so Christmas has been rather a nightmare here looking after the pair of them, and trying to run a business at the busiest time of year I'm kind of swamped Have asked a couple of people who live in that area to keep an eye open for the dog and phone Viv if they spot her. I haven't seen the dog myself, but one clue as regards colour is that one of the locals said she was the spliting image of her one, now which one though because she has 2. One is black bodied ie sadle, with white legs blacke head/ mask and white muzzle, the other is fawn/liver self colour. I'll try and find contact numbers for the peps we were chatting to about her. when I get 5 minutes, I have to go am being called, am chief cook bottle washer nurse maid etc I will try and phone when I know I have time to chat, sorry about this.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No matter what view anyone holds on this delicate issue, I believe that if this lass is meant to be caught, then it will happen, either because someone is committed to finding her, or because she is found injured. If caught, there are clearly many people who would offer to take her in. But it is essential that someone with experience of these feral ?hounds is involved, rather than just general experience of rescue greyhounds/lurchers. It is a long-term commitment and essential to get the very best future for her. That can be achieved, but can take years.. But its equally importantly, to absolutely ensure that she is not taken in somewhere and then, inadvertently, gets loose in an area she doesn't know, until trust has been established. That would be the ultimate tragedy. I agree with Bobble that GRWE would do their very best for her, also EGLR have had years of experience of catching these long-term feral dogs and giving them a good life. An offer has come from their group to take this lass if asked. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sounds like she is surviving OK, and also sounds like if she is caught and rehomed that only a good country home would suit now. The Greyhound Rescue West of England are the experts for this canine. They are brilliant at rehoming retired, abused and abondoned greyhounds and lurchers and do a wonderful job rehabilitating event he most difficult cases. Visit their website www.grwe.co.uk Their on duty number is 0700 785092. I am sure they would be happy to help in any way they can. They are the professionals in this particular case. Good luck to anyone trying to do the "right" thing for this dog and a big well done to the cabbie!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

She does seem to be fending for herself very nicely Angel I agree, and thanks very much for the local insight you have given us all with regards to this girlie. She is indeed feral, and as we all know dogs are very resorceful, as she is demonstrating very well. However, as she is apparently injured we will do our best to help her. Greyhounds adapt very well to home life straight from the track (admittedly most don't spend 3 years living the high life on the local tip when they retire!) and there are alot of experienced greyhound re-homers on hand to help if she is found. I would be fabulous if you could track down the local chap who has been helping her, and ask him to get in touch wth Viv as per below (she only has a phone not internet) I don't have a phone number for Liz Redpath but I will get one as she is very experienced with greyhounds. Thanks so much for giving us the heads up with what has been going on ~ what colour is she by the way??Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have to say that I agree with allangel, given all the story now. I am not sure that we would be doing her a favour by trying to capture her. Some help with food and medication maybe but I can't see her coping with domestication.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm a 40+ years experienced dog handler, groomer & dog listener with my premises in Gosport. The ghuy I spoke to who "Rabbits" down on the ranges says she has a den somewhere on browndown range, she's been seen around now for maybe 18 months or more. Some of my clients have spotted her when excercising their dogs on the field next to the range, and she's been seen scouting around the local Council amenity tip which is to the north of the field. there is a walk down by the north side of the tip, that skirts the north east of Browndown, and in midsummer she's been sighted sunning herself up by the moat and bailey. She's quite ferrel now, and this guy saw her catching rabbits, back this spring, so she's feeding herself. She could be making herself known because she needs treatment for her leg, I know he knew of someone feeding her regular but I don't know where they were leaving the food, but he asked me what they could use to help her joints and he was going to feed her sardines in sunflower oil, plus I gave him some homeopathic remedy for mange as it was rife in the area, but this was back in the autumn, say early oct? Try over in the caravan park, or at the tip, they may know the name of the guy, he must live locally. He's got a Border terrier and is always walking out with him. As for getting her to come to you, I doubt if she will trust humans again, and looking at it from her point of view (and this is hard for some dog lovers) She's livng the life dogs were meant to live, Whilst it is best for her in our eyes to catch her and confine her to OUR way of living, it is something she has never known, she's been used to the harsh racing conditions life, she doesn't know what "Home" life is, and to her it would be like being in prison, and I doublt (unless you could find a proper "Country working life ie catching rabbits and the freedomto live as she wants, with someone whome she trust) she would last in OUR world, she'd either try and escape constantly, or would loose the will to live and succome to various illness and conditons. Sometimes its hard to take a step back and think through the dogs view of life. I did when I 1st heard about this dog, I rushed down there to try and find her, but apart from signs of feeding, which could have been foxes though they are messy eaters, some of the kill areas only had blood spots which is unusual for foxes, they like to "play" with their food, where as dogs 9 time out of ten kill only for food, and will take it to a secluded place to eat it out of site. I'll try and phone the OP tomorrow, time willing. regards AngelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You've probably already thought of this but, could the taxi driver entice her into the back of his cab with some food? If he feeds her regularly she may have a little bit of trust in him. Good luck xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just wish that we were in the area, and able to help. Please if there is anyone in that area, do try to help. This weather is just about the worse for Greyhounds, particularly this one. No body fat, and not thick fur, and very scared. Please be caught and be safe for Christmas. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok just seen your post change and the number for Viv, thanks. The dog is apparently on MOD land and is seen mostly at night. A local taxi driver is feeding her, usually down by a cemetery. If anyone is able to help please link in with Liz/Viv so that there is a co-ordinated plan!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jayne there is a bit of a story behind this! The dog is actually believed to be a bitch and has been loose for between 2 to 3 years! She was re-homed from the local track, owner let her loose in the first week and she has been on the run ever since. Viv has been in touch with the RGT in that area and Liz Redpath is assisting. She will take the dog in if she is caught. Could we have a contact number on here for Viv please?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Jayne Do you have any idea if anyone could help with the following? Bit of a huge ?ask?, but you never know. If it was local to me, we could get some people together, but can?t do it at the distance. I had a call from a lady near Gosport on Monday. (Her name is Viv ? 02392 581505). She goes to visit her mother most evenings and when driving home has seen a stray greyhound almost every night at approx 11pm. She gets fairly close to him, but he is very scared and she can?t touch him ? though she says that she could almost throw a net or something over him if she had the right equipment. Parking is difficult as there are double yellow lines. I don?t know the area at all, but his habit is to go up Military Road, turns into the road to Lee on Solent, then turns right into the woods near Browndown. I phoned the Dog Warden for the area ? he sounded really nice (John McGee office 0800 0198 598) ? was polite and helpful on the phone and said he would ring her (which he did that day). Apparantly it is known to be an Irish greyhound, who was homed direct from the track to someone who let him off the lead after about a week!!!! He said that he now works some evenings and would see what he could do. She phoned me again about 5pm tonight. Its pretty obvious that no-one who cares too much is looking for him, so he won?t feature with you. She saw him again last night. People around there say that he has been out for a long time and is living wild and no-one seems to want to help. She says that she has phoned the D/W office 4 times today, but no-one has got back to her and she finds it unbearable to keep seeing this dog when it is so cold and he is a bit lame. Believe me, I know how busy you are ? but you might be able to pass this to someone ?on the spot? ? or even someone who is looking for some ?charity work? over Christmas. I haven?t got any ideas at all for that area. Do hope you are well ? wishing a Happy Christmas is a bit of a vain hope, yet, hey, who knows, one more dog might be saved ............e mail from helper.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
