No amount of money will replace a loved puppy, but it may help this happening to somebody else. I'm pleased to see it has been forwarded to vets get scanning by Jayne. I hope they will look at exactly what went wrong in this case. The microchip system seems majorly flawed.
Skywalker99
The vet should have given Bruces's owners his chip number when they chipped him shouldn't they? How else would the chip work to reunite if they didn't? I would be majorly p*ssed off if I had paid the vet to chip and they refused to give me the number...which I would regard as my property because I had paid them. Imo the vets have been complicit through their negligence in Bruce not being returned to his owners...I guess now it all depends how far his owners want to take this but I would take action for all the money I had spent with them since I got the dog, and the cost of getting a replacement dog if I wanted to do that..this should all be possible through the small claims court. I would certainly be looking at legal action against the vet for negligence and/or breach of contract. Nowadays I understand a vet will normally register a chip online at the time of implanting, except for biothermic chips (which I believe the owner still has to register themselves?). But in any event, when a batch of chips is delivered to a vet, they are pre-registered to that vet: hence even in the case where contact details are not up-to-date, the Dog Warden can contact the vet who implanted the dog... who would owe a duty of care to their client to inform them their dog has been found. (Remember this pup is 5 months old, so chipped very recently.)
Further, as the client has a contractual relationship with the vet to microchip the dog, the vet would be in breach of contract by refusing to tell the client what the microchip number is.
I'm not a fan of "naming and shaming", but in this case I think we should know who vet in question is...

Have forwarded to vetsgetscanning....

Agreed Captain, I would be considering legal action against the vet! And I had a similar situation to the one you describe with my cat 6 years ago....rang up to report her missing to discover they had no details any more!

Update from Bruce's Facebook group: "Help find missing Bruce
1 hr ·
Hello all and good afternoon, we had confirmation that Bruce from the police that Bruce had been located and is safe and well being very well looked after with another companion, He seems very happy and seems to like his new homešŸ”, the police don't want to go any further with the investigation now and is closed, We can't thank everyone enough for how supportive they have all been, thank you so much! Bruce will always be with us in our hearts however we have to do what's right for Bruce! Thank you to everyone again!! All of your help was truly appreciated!"

Owners have commented "We're not happy with this but there's nothing we can do, it's all down to the vets, legally because he was re homed he's not our dog any more so we don't really have a leg to stand on I'm afraid!"

Have to say I would be devastated if this were my puppy who I had microchipped to help reunite us if the worst happened, only to find he was never protected in the first place because the vet's never registered the chip with the owners details. When I had my cats microchipped last year the vet registered them in my presence, confirming all relevant contact details. She explained she was doing this to avoid any problems arising with incorrect contact details/missing details later on. It seems a great pity that all vets do not follow this protocol!

It would appear the moral here for everyone with a microchipped pet is to (1) double check that the microchip is registered to you, (2) regularly check it is still working when scanned, and (3) check regularly that your pet still exists on the microchip database. I say this as I discovered three years ago that my then 22 year old cat who was microchipped as a kitten had disappeared from his relevant database even though his two siblings microchipped at the same time were still there. His microchip was still working but if he had been lost and then found his chip would have scanned but there would have been no records of him anywhere, so would have been regarded as having an unregistered chip and no one could have contacted me to reunite us. Having seen several reports of elderly found cats being regarded as strays, taken to vets and then put to sleep before their owners could find them as they were considered to look "ill" and cats were not microchipped/details out of date/not registered, I was horrified to find my cat was at such risk. The database company could provide no answer as to why he had disappeared from their records and I had to pay for him to be re-registered even though none of the contact details had changed! I now regularly check everything is still in place just to be on the safe side!

Sometimes people say that a dog has bitten so they can take it back , this is just a puppy he has been through a several ordeals in his short life .Puppies do bite I should know I have plenty of them through my life and they all grew up to be well balanced .
Doglover
I agree with Captain......thinkmthe whole affair is terrible....should be with his owners
Skywalker99
I reading through the comments on his page, police say he can't go back to his original home because he bit someone and they have kids? Can they do this? He seems to be up for rehoming again?
Captain
Why are police refusing to let his owners know where Bruce is? He is a puppy and no doubt scared with everything he has been subjected to, and being rehomed just before Christmas. What is happening about the vets not having registered his microchip? If that had been done all of this could have been avoided.
Doglover
Skywalker 99 perhaps he bit someone as he is scared.......and needs to be back with his family...
Skywalker99
Just read a comment on his FB page that says he is back in a rehoming centre (he bit someone), but police refusing to let family know where he is....

Chipped animals may not be registered immediately for a number of reasons. Please do not point the finger at any particular party.

Thank you CJ, perhaps the new owner will see his posts & recognise him x

The dates picked up seems to be day after missing but it has been stated already rehomed straight away. Pounds must keep a dog for 7 days therefore he cannot have been rehomed till after 17th so any new owner cannot have had him that long and certainly not 2 weeks as suggested.

Bruce was chipped when vaccinated by vets in Rugby. It appears the chip was not immediately registered.
Bruce was picked up and scanned day after missing. as an unregistered chip he went to a pound. I do not know time scales but has been rehomed. The vets refuse to give owner the microchip number as state it breaks data protection. I have checked this legally and the microchip is his- vets entered a contract between owner and themselves so must give him the number.Last edited: 2016-12-24 17:50:12

Thanks CJ trying to organise direct contact for you x
DogLostCJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
who ever chipped this dog would have a copy of the forms as in triplicate. It cannot have been that long ago. one to chipper one to owner one sent to be recorded.so do owners not know the chip number? Vets would record it at a visit -so has this been checked?
DogLostCJ - Police Liaison & SE Regional Coordinator
It would also be helpful to have DIRECT CONTACT WITH OWNERS. i need them to confirm they had Bruce chipped them selves.have they a copy of the chip details. Did they report as missing when lost to the chip company.
DogLostLisa P - Regional Co-ordinator, Central
Thanks CJ, their fb post states that they don't have chip number this makes me think it could be a simple case that Bruce is still registered to breeder or registration is still being processed, I passed on Jayne's message to Bruce's fb page last night for owner to contact you, Katie who registered is a family friend not owner x

I cannot change to stolen until get a police CRN. Can you aso get owners to update microchip number so we have a record.
Owners need to speak to petlog to ask why details changed without their consent.
Were the details held up to date? had they changed address or phone numbers without alerting the chip company?
please get this information back to me in reply to email already sent- and will see what i can do to help.
Skywalker99
Owner..update his name to say stolen, and get a crn
Skywalker99
Jeez, someone has been super incompetent/negligent
charlie and sooty
How is this possible, for the chip details to be changed without owners consent...Can CJ help in any way?

ADMIN ... Latest post from Bruce's facebook group:
***CONFIRMED*** Bruce is now being treated as stolen! All of his details have been changed and we are now not able to have his microchip number, as he's not in our name anymore! He is still out there somewhere and we need him back! Christmas is only around the corner!

The police still don't seem very responsive, we have left numerous messages for the officer investigating & have heard absolute nothing back.

Presume police are aware of these facts? Keep making Bruce "TOO HOT TOO HANDLE"
katiepaine
It is, the family are devastated. As CCTV covers the back of the property he was taken from the front but no1 knows how. Either on purpose or coincidentally though my friend had damage done to the front of her property a few days prior to Bruce disappearing
Hollieberry
What a horrible thing for someone to say, how did Bruce go missing was it from the garden ?

Thank you Jane, a false report has been made to his family stating Bruce had been found deceased. This is not the case. Until we hear otherwise Bruce is presumed stolen.

Sorry to see that BRUCE is missing.
  • If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
  • Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
  • A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (108684)

  • You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
  • Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
  • If your dog has been stolen inform the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number (CRN). Send an email to stolen@doglost.co.uk.
  • If your dog is picked up and taken to rescue kennels, it can be legally re-homed after seven days. Visit rescue centres in person and do not rely on checking by phone alone. Other people may not recognise your dog by your description, so give them a DogLost poster.
  • Keep us updated by keeping your dog's page up to date and check for posts from helpers who may have suggestions and possible matches or sightings
